Troy Aikman No Longer Officially Working With Dolphins
After helping the Miami Dolphins reshape their football operations this past offseason, Hall of Fame quarterback and ESPN broadcaster Troy Aikman is no longer officially consulting with the organization.
According to a new report from Front Office Sports, Aikman has no formal, ongoing consulting agreement with the Dolphins. His official involvement was limited to helping the franchise search for a new general manager and head coach earlier this year.
Those searches ultimately led to the hiring of general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and head coach Jeff Hafley, who are now leading Miami through a significant rebuild.
The news clarifies Aikman’s relationship with the Dolphins, especially after months of speculation about whether the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback would keep a voice in the team’s football decisions.
When Dolphins owner Stephen Ross brought Aikman into the organization as a consultant, the move generated considerable attention throughout the NFL.
Aikman, who won three Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys and is one of the most recognizable television analysts in professional football, was seen as an experienced outside voice who could help Miami navigate an important offseason.
His involvement came as the Dolphins were attempting to establish a new direction for the franchise.
However, according to Front Office Sports, a source familiar with the arrangement confirmed that Aikman’s formal responsibilities ended with the hiring process.
That does not necessarily mean Aikman has completely stopped communicating with Miami’s leadership.
The report notes that it remains unclear whether Aikman continues to provide informal advice to Ross, Sullivan, or Hafley because of the relationships he developed during the hiring process.
But any such conversations would not be part of an official consulting agreement.
For Miami, the news reinforces that Sullivan and Hafley will lead the organization’s football decisions going forward.
The Dolphins enter their bye week at 0-5, and early results from the franchise’s rebuilding process have been disappointing on the field.
Miami is also dealing with significant salary cap challenges, including the financial consequences of releasing quarterback Tua Tagovailoa during the offseason.
As the organization works to rebuild its roster, develop young talent, and build a sustainable foundation, it faces several important decisions ahead.
Aikman helped Miami select the people responsible for those decisions, but there is currently no indication he has an official role in determining which players the Dolphins acquire, release, or draft.
That distinction is important.
While some fans may have believed Aikman remained closely involved in the team’s day-to-day football operations, the latest report suggests his official contribution was much more narrowly defined.
The news comes at an interesting time for Aikman professionally.
The longtime NFL broadcaster recently said he expects to become a free agent after the current football season ends.
His contract with ESPN, reportedly worth approximately $18 million annually, expires after the network’s Super Bowl coverage in February 2027.
Meanwhile, his longtime broadcasting partner Joe Buck has reportedly agreed to a new six-year contract extension with ESPN.
During a Thursday appearance on Dallas radio station 96.7 The Ticket, Aikman discussed his uncertain future and indicated he would evaluate his options after the season.
Those options could include staying with ESPN, joining another television network, or exploring a more substantial role with an NFL franchise.
However, Front Office Sports reports that league executives believe it would be difficult for an NFL team to match Aikman’s current broadcasting salary.

One question remains unanswered: could Aikman eventually return to the Dolphins in a more permanent capacity?
The report says it is unclear whether Ross would offer Aikman a front-office position if the former quarterback pursued it.
Over the years, speculation has also circulated about Aikman potentially joining the Dallas Cowboys organization, though nothing has materialized on that front.
For now, Aikman’s future in NFL management remains uncertain.
Because of his consulting work with the Dolphins, the NFL placed Aikman under restrictions similar to those imposed on Tom Brady, who serves as both a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders and a broadcaster for Fox.
Those restrictions limit Aikman’s access to NFL practices and team facilities but allow him to join certain production meetings remotely.
The biggest takeaway from Friday’s report is that Troy Aikman is not currently employed by the Miami Dolphins under an ongoing formal consulting agreement.
He helped Stephen Ross identify the franchise’s new general manager and head coach, but his official responsibilities did not extend beyond those searches.
That means Sullivan and Hafley are now tasked with turning around a franchise that has started the 2026 season with five consecutive losses.
Whether Aikman eventually returns to Miami in another capacity remains to be seen.
For now, the Dolphins’ rebuilding project belongs to the football leadership group he helped put in place
