Troy Aikman Remains with the Dolphins
Troy Aikman is staying on with the Miami Dolphins in a limited role for the new regime. Initially, Aikman was supposed to be a one-and-done after helping the team consult the general manager candidates.
Now, he says the experience with the Miami Dolphins was fulfilling and that he wants to continue working in the field, according to his interview on the Rodeo Time Podcast.
In 2016, Aikman revealed that the Dolphins had almost brought him out of retirement to play again back in 2004, but that fell through. He now has a chance to continue helping the team by providing direct input on specific aspects.
The former 3 time Super Bowl champion and Hall of Fame quarterback retired from the sport in 2000, almost immediately jumping into the booth as a color commentator for the NFL channel outlets.
He has considered coaching but says the hours and workload are too much for him to handle. Aikman was brought on in January to assist Stephen Ross and a few other high-ranking members of the Miami Dolphins organization in finding a new general manager for the team.
Aikman will now stay on, directly reporting to the team’s owner and assisting him with personnel in some capacity. It is not a full-time deal, as he will still be with Joe Buck in the booth at ESPN, giving great insight and commentary during Monday Night Football. They are the longest tenured duo in the booth.
Aikman’s role with the front office and ownership will likely stay in the shadows for the time being. He was the one who announced his intention to stay on. Hopefully, his work in finding a general manager pays off, and he will be able to stay on with the team just to assist with personnel and staff changes.
