For a while, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that this would be Mike McCarthy's final season as Dallas Cowboys head coach.
However, there's seemingly been some momentum building lately for McCarthy to return in 2025. The Cowboys are only 5-7, but they've won two in a row heading into tonight's game against the Cincinnati Bengals, and even owner Jerry Jones refused to rule out a potential contract extension for the one-time Super Bowl champion.
Dak Prescott, the Cowboys' current franchise quarterback, vouched for McCarthy recently, and Troy Aikman, one of Dallas' most legendary signal callers did the same Monday during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan.
"Short of Bill Belichick, I don't know who you're going to bring in that has a better resume," Aikman said of McCarthy, adding that the "likes the way this team is playing right now, even without their franchise quarterback."
"I sense that it's a team that really believes in Mike McCarthy," Aikman added. I feel the locker room wants him back. I think he's a really good football coach. I believe Jerry Jones thinks he's a really good football coach, too. ... As we stand and talk right now, I expect Mike McCarthy to be back in 2025."
Of course, there are still four weeks for everything to change, but the fact McCarthy is still even being talked about as possibly being the Cowboys' 2025 head coach is a surprise considering where things were earlier this season.
The easiest way for the 61-year-old leader to maintain his position is to continue leading Dallas to wins. The Cowboys currently trail the Bengals 14-10 late in the second quarter on Monday Night Football.
At 5-7, the Cowboys likely need to win out to have a chance of earning a wildcard berth.
