The Miami Dolphins are officially eliminated from playoff contention.
Their 28-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night was a perfect reflection of their season. Despite Mike McDaniel relying on De'Von Achane, Tua Tagovailoa's shortcomings and erratic decision-making doomed the team's chances.
That's why, after watching him underthrow Jaylen Waddle for his league-leading 15th interception of the season, Troy Aikman just couldn't take it anymore.
"It's a little bit of a head scratcher," Aikman said, per the Palm Beach Post. "They haven't really asked him to do a lot. And yet there still are those types of throws where you're just not quite sure what it is that he's seeing or not seeing. But I know dolphins fans have seen a lot of this now that he leads the league with 15 interceptions."
The Dolphins seemed to get back on track after starting the season 1-6, and head coach Mike McDaniel might deserve another chance to lead this team after such an impressive turnaround. Tagovailoa, on the other hand, might have lost the benefit of the doubt.
He lacks the arm strength and size, has struggled to read coverages for most of his time in the league, has a long history of injuries, has lost mobility from his college days and has refused to take any accountability for the team's struggles.
And while his massive dead cap hit of $67 million might make it tough for the Dolphins to move on from him, they might have no choice at this point.
