Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce’s hosting stint on "Saturday Night Live" in 2023 was not just a moment of humor but a story years in the making.
Cast member Heidi Gardner shared her relentless efforts to bring Kelce to the SNL stage during an interview on the podcast “Not Skinny But Not Fat.”
Gardner revealed that she had aimed for Kelce to host the show, recognizing his natural charisma and comedic timing.
“He’s funny, he’s charming,” Gardner explained.
Despite her enthusiasm, SNL creator Lorne Michaels placed a significant condition on Kelce’s appearance: he needed to win a Super Bowl first.
“It was a lot of pressure,” Gardner admitted.
However, Kelce met the challenge, clinching another Super Bowl victory with the Chiefs in early 2023. Shortly after, he hosted SNL’s 48th season, impressing fans and critics alike.
Gardner emphasized that Kelce’s talents had been evident well before his publicized relationship with pop superstar Taylor Swift.
“His skills were already on their way,” she said, addressing claims that his profile rose solely because of Swift.
Kelce’s SNL episode also marked a unique moment in the show's history. Gardner, who appeared in a sketch with Kelce and his brother former Philadelphia Eagles star Jason Kelce, organized a tailgate party in her dressing room in homage to the Chiefs' game-day traditions.
To her surprise, the Kelce brothers joined in, enjoying barbecue alongside Gardner's family and friends.
Gardner reflected on the night fondly, noting that Kelce may be the first host in SNL history to tailgate before a show.
