Tua Tagovailoa, Dolphins teammates donate to family of superfan who died in car crash

Navy veteran and Dolphins superfan Eric Carmona tragically died in a car crash last week. Several members of the Dolphins organization, including quarterback Tua Tagovailoa have made substantial contributions to the GoFundMe set up for the Carmona family.

Carmona, who was only 30 years old, wasn't just a Dolphins fan but an avid Tagovailoa supporter. So much so that in 2021, Tagovailoa's second season, he created the Twitter account known as "TuAnon" to defend his franchise signal-caller from criticism by the media and fans.

The account, which has gained more than 23,000 followers since its inception, was run anonymously by Carmona, whose identity was not revealed until the announcement of his death. Aside from the hundreds of tweets in Tagovailoa's defense, Carmona made several videos where he would wear a dolphin mask and alter his voice, which garnered the most traction online.

On June 2, a GoFundMe was organized for Carmona's family with the initial goal of raising $50,000. As word spread of the TuAnon creator's death, donations from his own fans and beyond started pouring in, and as of this publication, more than $85,000 has been raised.

As a gesture of gratitude to show support for his most loyal backer, Tagovailoa came across the GoFundMe page and donated $10,000 upon hearing the devastating news. The 25-year-old's donation remains the largest the family has received.

Star wide receiver Tyreek Hill also pitched in $7,000 on behalf of his Soul Runner Speed Academy. An admin running the TuAnon account expressed their appreciation for Hill's donation on Twitter, to which the seven-time Pro Bowler responded, "We family fins know that."

Per USA Today's Safid Deen, Dolphins president and CEO Tom Garfinkel donated $1,000. Additionally, multiple Dolphins players and NFL personalities have contributed to the cause in recent days.

During a news conference at Miami's Wednesday minicamp session, Tagovailoa addressed his donation and shared that he and his Dolphins teammates have the Carmona family in their thoughts.

"He's a diehard fan about me, but out of my respect to him, I mean, he basically not just covered me but the entire Dolphins," Tagovailoa said. "For me to have done that, Tyreek [Hill] was able to do the same. Other guys have been able to do the same as well, to donate. But I just want his wife and his kids to know that we're praying for them and that we're thinking of them."

Carmona is survived by his wife, Vanessa, and four children.
