Tua Tagovailoa replaces injured Jacoby Brissett in Dolphins' upset win over Ravens

Miami Dolphins quarterback Jacoby Brissett appeared to suffer a knee injury in the third quarter of a Thursday Night Football matchup against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 10.

Brissett, 28, was sacked by Ravens pass-rusher Justin Houston and fumbled on the play. He immediately grabbed at his right knee in pain, but walked off under his own power. After being evaluated in the medical tent and jogging on the sideline, he was declared questionable to return and was replaced in the game by Tua Tagovailoa.

Tagovailoa was the Dolphins' starter for the season opener, but missed three games with a rib injury suffered in Week 2. He resumed his role as the starter in Week 6, but suffered a finger injury that kept him out of Week 9. While Tagovailoa returned to the active roster for the team's game Thursday, he was made Brissett's backup.

While the Dolphins led the game when Brissett exited, he completed just 11 of his 23 passes for 156 yards, and Miami's only points came on a pair of field goals.

In his five starts in 2021, Tagovailoa threw seven touchdowns with five interceptions. He was selected by Miami with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, but that didn't stop the Dolphins from reportedly pursuing a trade with the Houston Texans for Deshaun Watson.

Tagovailoa would go 8-of-13 for 158 yards and a rushing touchdown.

While much of the attention will fall on the Dolphins' quarterback situation, it was Miami's defense that truly led the team to victory. The Ravens were never really able to get anything going — save for a drive that resulted in a touchdown in garbage time when it was quite clear the game was out of reach for Baltimore.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson went 26-of-43 for 238 yards, an interception and the aforementioned garbage-time TD. He was also limited to just 39 yards on the ground. Going into Thursday night's game, Jackson was averaging 276 yards through the air and 75 rushing yards.

The Dolphins defense also forced two turnovers, including a beautiful fumble return for a touchdown by two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard.

With the win, Miami is now 3-7, while Baltimore dropped to 6-3. Come Week 11, the Dolphins will head to New Jersey to take on the New York Jets, while the Ravens will travel to the Windy City to face the Chicago Bears.

Going into the weekend slate, Miami sits third in the AFC East standings. This loss will have a greater impact on Baltimore, however. While the Ravens still sit atop the ultra-competitive AFC North, the 5-3 Pittsburgh Steelers and 5-4 Cleveland Browns have prime opportunities to gain ground in the division race, as they face the Detroit Lions and New England Patriots, respectively. (The 5-4 Cincinnati Bengals have a bye week.)
