Tua Tagovailoa takes a massive drop in esteem of his peers despite showing last year just how valuable he is to the Miami Dolphins

Tua Tagovailoa showed in 2024 just how much he means to the Miami Dolphins, and it was in a way that the Dolphins and their fans would prefer not to go through again.

The Dolphins' franchise quarterback suffered a concussion in the team's 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 2, and the result was a trip to the Injured Reserve list and a four-game absence.

In his absence, the forward pass became a foreign concept to the team that made it look revolutionary during the 2023 season.  Between Skylar Thompson, Tim Boyle, and Tyler Huntley, Miami had no answers to get the passing game on track, and that resulted in a handful of ugly losses with very little on the offensive end to show for it.  A 15-10 win at New England was the lone win during his absence.

As such, one might obtain a bit of a newfound respect for Tagovailoa and his talented arm.  However, one also has to prove he has the most important ability in the league - availability - and that's something that Tagovailoa has largely failed to prove in the NFL through five seasons.

The NFL is in the midst of putting out its Top 100 list, which is voted on by the players, and Tagovailoa's ranking dropping in a big way from 2024 to 2025.  He dropped from 36 to 91.

The shift in rankings isn't too much of a surprise, as the rankings can be reactionary from year to year.  For example, Tua checked in at 82 before the 2023 season after another injury-affected season in 2022.  But he turned that image around with a terrific year in 2023, earning Pro Bowl honors and leading the league with 4672 passing yards.

Ultimately, the NFL Top 100 doesn't serve as much more than bragging rights, but it's still interesting to see where players view their peers in the league from year to year. And it's clear that Tua has a lot to prove in the minds of those around the league in what is a huge year for himself, Mike McDaniel, and Chris Grier in 2025.
