The Miami Dolphins' tight end room is squarely in the spotlight for the 2025 season.
Miami's tight end room saw historic production in the passing game courtesy of Jonnu Smith in 2024. Smith shredded the franchise records as a receiver, setting the stage for a contract standoff this summer. The impact of the entire group, not just Smith's pass catching, could hold the key to the Dolphins becoming more balanced in their play next year. The Dolphins' run game requires strong blocking from the skill group on the edges and the Dolphins didn't get it in 2024.
As a result, this hasn't been a group immune to changes. There's a chance that Smith may not be back with the team amid that ongoing negotiation with the Dolphins. Miami also said goodbye to one of the more long-tenured players on the entire roster this offseason when they waived veteran Durham Smythe.
In his place, the Dolphins targeted veteran tight end Pharaoh Brown in free agency and then signed undrafted rookie Jalin Conyers after the 2025 NFL Draft.
Brown and Conyers could not be more different as players. Brown is an in-line blocker first and foremost. Conyers is a hybrid weapon whose versatility was highlighted during his time at both Arizona State and Texas Tech. It gives Miami a variety of skill sets in the tight end room when added to returning "starters" in Smith and Julian Hill.
Both are set to soak up some knowledge from their peers this week.
Each offseason, the NFL's tight ends hold a summit. It's called "Tight End University", also known as "TEU", and serves as a brilliant meeting of the minds for tight ends across the NFL. TEU is set to kick off this week in Nashville, and the new faces in Miami's tight end room are scheduled to be in attendance.
Brown will enter the 2025 season trying to uproot Julian Hill as the team's primary 'Y' tight end. Conyers is simply trying to leave the right impression this summer to earn a 53-man roster spot and potentially set the stage for him to serve as an heir to Smith as an 'F' tight end or flex weapon. This year's TEU summit should be an excellent opportunity, at least for Conyers as a rookie, to soak up insight from the NFL's best at the position.
Miami has been searching for a pet project at the position for the better part of Mike McDaniel's tenure as the head coach of the team. Conyers could get the next crack and he must hope he can fare better than former UDFA Tanner Conner (2022), former draft choice Elijah Higgins (who was claimed by Arizona and will also be in attendance), and more.
Conyers' training camp and preseason will be vital to his bid to stand out. Seeing him go the extra mile this summer and attend this year's Tight End University summit can only help.
Interestingly enough, neither of Miami's "incumbents" are reportedly set to attend. Smith, if he's with the Dolphins, should feel totally safe with his role with Miami. But Hill should absolutely be looking over his shoulder at Brown as the Dolphins enter camp next month.
Keep an eye on this group when the pads come on in late July.
