The Pittsburgh Steelers are fully in 2025 training camp now that the team had its first practice in pads on Wednesday. Tempers always seem to flare when the pads come on, but Pittsburgh decided to take things a step back on Thursday as some veterans got the day off and the players were just in helmets and shorts. Despite the lack of pads, things still got chippy as the team went through some one-on-one drills and there were some heated team periods.
Pittsburgh is known for having one of the more intense training camps across the league. Head Coach Mike Tomlin likes to have his team play full contact in practice more so than any other coach in the NFL, and that creates some heated exchanges within the team. Although no pads were involved, two newly-acquired players kept getting into it on Thursday. Safety Juan Thornhill and tight end Jonnu Smith had some intense reps going against one another, and the two exchanged some words.
Jonnu Smith and Juan Thornhill are SCRAPPING. Smith got physical with Thornhill on his 1-on-1 route, caught the ball over him and the DB took a lot of offense.

They’re still jawing as it’s broken up. “Don’t get it twisted,” Thornhill yelled.
Thornhill was covering Smith during a rep, and the two got into after the fact. This is pretty normal for training camp. The competitive juices are flowing, so fights are going to be seen. It might be a good sign to see fights as it shows that the guys on the team care, especially since it is between two players that Pittsburgh acquired during the 2025 offseason.
Pittsburgh signed Thornhill during free agency, and the organization then traded for Smith from the Miami Dolphins. He came over in the deal where Pittsburgh was able to acquire Jalen Ramsey as well in exchange for Minkah Fitzpatrick. Smith was a Pro-Bowler during the 2024 season as he was extremely efficient in Miami, and the Steelers are hoping to see more of that in 2025.
Thornhill had a pretty good start to his career with the Kansas City Chiefs, but the last two seasons with the Cleveland Browns were a little rocky. He was questioned at times for his effort, but that shouldn't be an issue in Pittsburgh. Low effort is not accepted by the Steelers, and his teammates will get on him quick if it becomes an issue. Thornhill's role is going to be bigger than expected after the Fitzpatrick trade. He was signed as the backup to Fitzpatrick initially, but now with the star safety gone, he is going to be the starting safety when Pittsburgh is in the nickel.
The newly acquired safety could be an x-factor for the defense. He was a quality starter on multiple Super Bowl teams during his time in Kansas City, and if he could bring that winning pedigree and experience to Pittsburgh, it could elevate the defense.
Smith is known to be a versatile tight end. When he was acquired by Pittsburgh the fan base thought he could be lining up out wide at receiver, and that is still a possibility. However, the Pro-Bowler has been seen in the backfield during some training camp practices. Full back snaps are expected, but he has been the recipient of some toss plays at running back.
More 04 personnel today with Jonnu Smith in the backfield. With Rodgers under center, they tossed it to Jonnu on one play and handed it to him on another.

Pittsburgh's tight end room is one of the best and most well-rounded in the league, which is why using 04 personnel might be a good idea. 04 personnel means there are four tight ends on the field and zero running backs. Smith plays the role of running back in the formation, and it will be an interesting thing to look out for during the regular season.
