Two Seahawks offensive rookies are feeling a little extra heat this summer — one by choice and one by chance

The Seattle Seahawks are one of the NFL's most fascinating teams entering into 2025. This is a team that's completely flushed the system on the offensive side of the ball in favor of a new vision this season. The powers that be seem to be satisfied thus far — as general manager John Schneider just secured a contract extension to lock him in through 2031.

Schneider's latest collection of new talent is going to go a long way in helping this offense to realize its potential in 2025. More specifically, the developments of the last few weeks have Seattle's draft class in a position to fill critical roles for the Seahawks. Few draft classes have more on their plate over the next month and a half to prep for the season.

Why Seattle's top draft picks are under even more pressure

Some of this new pressure is by choice. Some is by chance. Today's news that offensive tackle Charles Cross underwent surgery for a dislocated finger will cost him a significant chunk of the summer is the latter. He's tentatively expected to be ready for the start of the season but with rookie Grey Zabel now losing valuable reps and opportunities to work alongside Cross, it will be on the former Bison lineman to go the extra mile to be prepared without Cross serving as an active participant in practice.

It's a bummer for Cross, but the Seahawks are fortunate that this could be done early and presumably be taken care of before the season starts. It does set the stage, however, for Zabel to go the extra mile and rise to the occasion. That can be easier said than done.

The Seahawks can't control injuries. But they can control transactions. With tight end Noah Fant being cut a week and a half ago, the Seahawks chose to put a little extra pressure onto second-round draft choice Elijah Arroyo. Arroyo is a freakish mismatch tight end who can thrive in the slot. The Seahawks' timing here only opened the door for Arroyo to seize a major role in the room as a rookie on the eve of training camp.

Arroyo was the team's third choice in top-50 picks. There's already plenty of pressure that comes with that level of investment. But amid a complete offensive overhaul, Seattle has, willingly or not, pushed a little extra onto their key rookie faces on that side of the ball this summer.

How they respond and play from the jump will tell us a lot about both.
