Could Russell Wilson be on the move before the Nov. 4 trade deadline? We're not sure, but the New York Giants would be wise to field some calls.
There's no question the Giants are committed to rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart. In four career starts, he has completed 60.2% of his passes for 791 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions. The Ole Miss product also has 178 yards and three scores on the ground.
As for Wilson, he had 778 passing yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in his first three starts with the G-Men. He was benched following a brutal performance against the Kansas City Chiefs. After that decision was made by Brian Daboll, the veteran quarterback made it clear that he's not ready to retire.
“For me, personally, I’m not done,” Wilson told reporters. “I’ve got so much belief in myself and I know what I’m capable of. I believe I was able to show it, especially on the road in Dallas.”
If Wilson wants to start again, he'll need to get out of New York.
On Wednesday, ESPN's Matt Bowen and Jeremy Fowler ranked the top 25 trade candidates this NFL season. Unsurprisingly, Wilson made the list.
"Trading Wilson would be a challenge because of the scarcity of available starting QB jobs. The Bengals had a clear opening two weeks ago but opted for Joe Flacco," Fowler wrote. "The Giants could slide Jameis Winston into the No. 2 quarterback spot if they aggressively pursue a trade of Wilson. At this stage of Wilson's career, compensation would not be steep. His days as a productive starter appear to be over. He has a trade-friendly base salary of $2 million."
ESPN listed the Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints as potential fits for Wilson. We're not so sure about the first option though considering his history with Pete Carroll and Geno Smith.
The Saints could use a veteran quarterback, but head coach Kellen Moore might be content riding out the rest of the season with Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough.
