Tyrann Mathieu has the ideal reference to get into coaching if he needs one.
As the Kansas City Chiefs gathered for another day of training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, head coach Andy Reid began his daily press remarks by publicly acknowledging Mathieu's recent retirement. The former All-Pro safety was a franchise leader for a Chiefs defense that delivered the team's first Super Bowl victory in 50 years.
“Just a shout out to Tyrann for a great career,” Reid said. “What a great career he had. The game will miss him, miss his energy—definitely an energy giver, a great leader.”
Mathieu officially announced his retirement earlier this week after three seasons with the New Orleans Saints and a decade-long NFL career. While he played for multiple teams, his three-year stint in Kansas City remains a defining chapter—both for him and the franchise.
Not only did Reid praise Mathieu’s past, he also looked forward to his potential future—as a coach. “Hopefully, he gets into coaching, because he'd be a heck of a coach if he decides to go that way,” said Reid. “He'd be tremendous, but we wish he and his family all the best going forward.”
Mathieu's impact could be felt well beyond the field, although his versatility and toughness were vital components there as well. The safety was a coach's favorite in K.C. for his culture-changing personality that helped the Chiefs defense take a massive leap forward under then-new coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
Overall, Mathieu played 12 seasons in the NFL, including five with the Arizona Cardinals to begin his career after being selected in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He also spent one year with the Houston Texans and his final three seasons in New Orleans.
Mathieu's arrival coincided with the emergence of the Chiefs as an NFL dynasty, and Reid has made no secret of his appreciation for Mathieu over the years. If Mathieu is, indeed, interested in coaching at this stage, no one would be surprised to see Reid angling for him as an addition to his own staff.
