Jones has been out in the Giants ‘ previous two games due to a neck injury. The Giants were a play away from beating the Buffalo Bills in Week 6, and they won their game against the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

The Giants offense has played better with Taylor under center. Much of that has to do with Taylor not turning the ball over. He was 18/29 passing for 279 yards and two touchdowns against the Commanders. Taylor added another 25 yards on the ground.

Jones has been dreadful to start the season. He’s thrown for 884 yards in five games and has two touchdown passes to six interceptions. That’s not what the Giants expected from Jones when he signed his four-year contract for $160 million this offseason.

Tyrod Taylor talks about his role in the Giants offense

Reporters asked Taylor following the game if he should be the team’s starter against the New York Jets in Week 8, regardless of Jones’ injury status. Per the Giants website, Taylor said he would prepare to do so but that the coaching staff would have to make that decision:

“That’s up to coach. Obviously, if DJ (quarterback Daniel Jones) is healthy, he’s a captain on our team, captain of our team, a leader on the offense and I am here to support in any way that I can…

Again, that decision is out of my hands and I’m perfectly fine with how, whatever decision is being made. My mindset, there is no attitude change. I am going to continue to keep leading in the way I lead, preparing in the way that I prepare and staying ready for the opportunity.”

The Giants should give Taylor another crack against a tough Jets defense. There’s no reason to trot out a quarterback with neck issues against an elite Jets defensive line. The Jets defense is a better gauge for the Giants coaching staff to determine what Taylor is capable of as a starter.
