The Packers showed signs of life in Week 2 of the preseason, which is a significant upgrade over Green Bay’s showing in the exhibition opener against the New York Jets.
Despite Jordan Love and a litany of the Packers’ starters sidelined for Saturday’s game, the Packers still pulled off a 23-19 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 2 of the preseason.
However, there were still some major areas of concern for the Packers, and for head coach Matt LaFleur.
Even though Green Bay was playing a slew of backups, committing 12 penalties for 95 yards didn’t come close to meeting the standard LaFleur has set, and the Packers’ head coach sounded off on the mistakes after the game.
“Completely unacceptable,” LaFleur told reporters, of a personal foul called against Green Bay after the whistle had blown.
LaFleur believes that there needs to be better accountability from the players, especially once the games begin to count for real, Week 1 against the Detroit Lions.
“We’ve got to do a better job,” LaFleur said “We coach these guys to line up off the guard, so we might have to look at our guards and see about their alignment, see if they’re too far back.
“Guys have to dial in and focus and make sure they’re doing all the little things the right way.”
LaFleur and the Packers have to hope that by the time the regular season kicks off, and several of Green Bay’s key contributors are the ones on the field that this is a much more disciplined team and one that commits far fewer penalties because at that point mistakes are both magnified and more costly.
