The Indianapolis Colts have an intriguing group set to take the field for rookie minicamp on May 9 and 10, including eight 2025 NFL Draft picks and their undrafted free agents.
All eyes will be on the team's first-round pick, TE Tyler Warren, as the fan base is pumped to see him put on a Colts helmet for the first time. While I agree that it will be exciting to see, I think there are a few players set to participate this weekend who have the chance to significantly increase their odds of making the Colts' opening day 53-man roster.
I know kicker battles aren't the most exciting things to watch for everyone, but the Colts are going to have one of the most open competitions they've had in recent memory this training camp. They chose to move on from Matt Gay and are set to have a 2024 undrafted free agent, Spencer Sharder, compete with a 2025 undrafted free agent, Maddux Trujillo. Shrader probably has a slight edge, just because he spent some time with the Colts last year and started games for multiple different teams in 2024. Rookie minicamp will be Trujillo's first chance to leave his mark and catch the coaching staff's attention. He has a big leg, and if he can be consistent from 50+, he will make himself very valuable and could begin his NFL career as the Colts' starting kicker. I won't lie, the fact that his nickname is Auto-Maddux means I have to root for the guy; I don't have a choice.
The Colts using a sixth-round pick on Riley Leonard already gives him a bit of an upper hand for the upcoming battle to be the Colts' QB three for the 2025 season. Keeping three QBs on the 53-man roster in the past didn't seem like a smart process for most NFL teams. The emergency QB three rule in the NFL has changed things for teams, and it has become way more common across the league for teams to keep three on their roster. The Colts are one of those teams, keeping three on the active roster for the last couple of years, with Sam Ehlinger holding that role in previous seasons. Ehlinger is now gone, and Leonard is set to compete with second-year Jason Bean. In my opinion, Leonard's college starting experience and the team using a draft pick on him already give him an upper hand. However, if Leaonrd can use rookie minicamp to build some positive momentum, he could have a giant lead when rookie minicamp kicks off on May 9.
Last up, I have one more undrafted free agent with Ole Miss RB Ulysses Bentley IV. The Colts' top two RBs on the depth chart seem pretty locked in with Jonathan Taylor and 2025 fifth-round pick DJ Giddens. After that, though, there's gonna be a pretty significant battle for the final one-two roster spots. With Khalil Herbert, Tyler Goodson, Salvon Ahmed, and Ulysses Bentley IV fighting for those spots. Goodson is the only one who has been with the Colts longer than this offseason, so the other three are entering on pretty equal playing fields. Bentley flashed a lot of talent in college and has the chance to use the toughness he runs with to earn a roster spot, and that starts in rookie minicamp.
