Underdog report: Super Bowl LVIII edition

The 49ers are currently two-point favorites against the Chiefs for Super Bowl LVIII. San Francisco may have the NFL’s most talented roster, but can they handle Kansas City's "Big Three?"

Odds via DraftKings as of Feb. 2.

QB Patrick Mahomes

Statistically, Mahomes had a down year in 2023. His 4,183 yards passing were his second-fewest as a starter and his 63.0 QBR rating was a career-low. He threw 14 fewer touchdowns compared to 2022 and his 14 interceptions were the most of his career.

The playoffs are a different story. In his past six postseason appearances, Mahomes has completed 70% of his passes while averaging seven yards per attempt. He also has 11 touchdowns without an interception.

He only threw for 182 yards in last year’s Super Bowl but had three touchdowns and only six incompletions. With a win on Sunday, Mahomes can become the fifth quarterback in NFL history to win at least three Super Bowl championships, joining Troy Aikman (three), Terry Bradshaw (four), Tom Brady (six) and Joe Montana (four).

TE Travis Kelce

Kelce’s numbers were also down this year. The All-Pro tight end had just five touchdowns in the regular season and his 984 yards were his fewest since 2015. After failing to score a touchdown in his final six games, Kelce came alive in the playoffs with three scores in as many games with 23 catches for 262 yards, second-most among all playoff receivers.

He caught all 11 of his targets against the Ravens in what turned out to be a record-setting performance. During the game, Kelce and Mahomes set a new record for most postseason touchdowns for a duo in NFL history (16), passing Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski. He also broke Jerry Rice's record for most postseason catches with 156.

Kelce led all Chief’s receivers with six catches for 81 yards and a touchdown in last year’s Super Bowl. With wide receiver Rashee Rice no longer playing like a rookie, the veteran tight end should have even more room to operate this year. And with hundreds of millions of “Swifties” in his corner, Kelce could be an unstoppable force.

RB Isiah Pacheco

Pacheco may not be Walter Payton, but the 49ers aren’t exactly the ‘85 Bears on defense these days. After finishing the regular season with the third-best run defense in the league (89.7 yards per game), San Francisco has allowed 159 rush yards per game in the playoffs, second only to the Pittsburgh Steelers (179).

Meanwhile, Pacheco has seven touchdowns in his last seven games, including one in each playoff game. He ended the regular season with a career-best 130 yards against New England and had a career-high 24 carries in the AFC Championship Game against the Ravens.

Like Kelce, Pacheco is getting hot at the right time. As long as head coach Andy Reid continues to call a balanced offense (103 passes, 90 runs in the playoffs), Pacheco could be too much for San Francisco to handle.

The Kansas City Chiefs will face the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, Feb. 11.
