Undrafted free agents invited to New York Jets NFL Rookie Minicamp who could potentially sign with the team
Steve Roberts-USA TODAY Sports

NFL rookie minicamps are kicking off this weekend! The New York Jets are one of the first NFL teams kicking off their rookie minicamp this weekend May 3-5. All of the draft picks and top-dollar guaranteed contract undrafted free agent signings will get most of the attention, but general manager John Schneider also invited some intriguing undrafted free agents who will attend the rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.

This rookie minicamp is effectively be one of the last shots for these undrafted invites to make a strong impression and earn an NFL contract. If they're unsigned at this point, an NFL future is certainly a long shot, but for the chosen few who do get signed after minicamps it provides a hopeful beginning for their professional football journey. Let's dive into some of the top undrafted free agents who might just earn their first NFL contract this weekend at Jets rookie minicamp!

Zion Puckett, S Auburn

Three-year starters in the SEC generally perform well in the NFL, so it's a bit surprising Zion Puckett went completely undrafted and unsigned. He's an imperfect defensive back when it comes to coverage, but he's got great size to play close to the line of scrimmage. He shed some weight for Auburn's pro day this spring (to 6'0", 213 pounds), but he certainly played at over 220 pounds for much of his career. If the Jets don't sign him he likely lands somewhere else because of his physicality in the run game and ability to play deep if needed.

Markese Stepp, RB Western Kentucky

There was some legitimate hype for Markese Stepp back when he was a second year player for USC in 2019. He averaged about 6.4 yards per touch that season, but an ankle injury derailed what could have been a special year. Then unfortunately he just kept getting injured wherever he went after that. He finally stayed healthy last fall in his third stop (also played briefly at Nebraska), but Western Kentucky limited his workload using a three-headed committee of running backs.

At 6'0", 230 pounds Stepp fits the feature back mold the Jets keep acquiring. They drafted Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis this year, but Stepp could certainly be in the mix for a practice squad role, then grow into something more. Israel Abanikanda was wildly disappointing last year, and Isaiah Davis is an FCS talent who may be easily passed on the depth chart.

Sebastian Delasoudas, C Rhode Island

The Jets should be set at center with Joe Tippman, their All-Rookie star-in-the-making, but what if he goes down at any point? The options beyond him are not great. The Jets should add Delasoudas if he impresses at rookie minicamp. He logged over 2,500 snaps at center for Rhode Island and posted incredible 98% (or better) pass block efficiency over the last three years. He doesn't have perfect measurables, but he should be a great addition as an interior offensive line depth piece right away.
