Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs, after a disappointing 2025 NFL season, have already made several changes to the coaching staff. In addition to losing multiple assistants, including running backs coach Todd Pinkston, the Chiefs replaced offensive coordinator Matt Nagy with Eric Bieniemy, who previously held the position in Kansas City from 2018 to 2022.
With the changes Reid and the Chiefs have made to the coaching staff, the organization is aiming to return to its Super Bowl-winning ways. After finishing 6-11, Kansas City missed the 2025 NFL Playoffs entirely, snapping a 10-year postseason streak that included three Super Bowl titles in five appearances. Now, Reid has shown interest in adding another assistant on the offensive side of the ball.
DeMarco Murray spent his college career with the Oklahoma Sooners from 2006-2010, earning three All-Big 12 honors. The running back was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft, where he spent four seasons, winning NFL Offensive Player of the Year. After stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans, Murray retired from playing in 2017, electing to go back to college for his first coaching job.
Murray began his coaching career with Arizona in 2019, joining the Wildcats as the Running Backs coach. One year later, he joined Oklahoma, where he has spent the last six seasons. Under Murray, the Sooners had two running backs hit the 1,000 rushing yards mark, including Eric Gray (1,366) and Kennedy Brooks (1,253).
While Murray still has one year remaining on his contract at Oklahoma, Reid and the Chiefs have shown interest in bringing him in as their running backs coach, despite not pursuing him in the past.
"Oklahoma’s DeMarco Murray has emerged as one of the coaches of interest to the Kansas City #Chiefs for their running backs coach opening, sources tell @CBSSports," CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz wrote on X. "The former NFL star running back has been Oklahoma’s running backs coach the last six seasons."

Reid and the Chiefs will also be looking to make some changes to the roster, especially sitting nearly $50 milion over the cap. Free agency will begin on March 11, before the 2026 NFL Draft on April 23.
