Unlikely Hero steps up for Dolphins in Win over Jets
De’Von Achane‘s scary knee injury in the second quarter of Sunday’s contest between the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets opened up an opportunity for second-year running back Jaylen Wright to get his most burn in a game this season. Wright has been behind Achane and rookie running back Ollie Gordon II in the pecking order this season, but he reminded folks of his talent on Sunday.
He ran for a game-high and career-best 107 yards on 24 carries in a game the Dolphins went on to win by a final score of 34-10. Wright picked up his first rushing touchdown of his sophomore season as well, and he led another great effort all-around on the ground from Miami’s offensive attack.
The Dolphins picked up all but 119 of their 358 yards of offense by running the ball, and four players for the team totaled more than 15 rushing yards. Achane even ran for 92 yards despite leaving the game early, and he was on pace for yet another monster showing before he went down.
But any fans who think that Sunday marked the start of a stretch of great play from Wright to cap off the season should perhaps pump the brakes. It doesn’t seem like Achane is seriously hurt, as he allegedly could have returned to the Jets game if need be, and he hasn’t been ruled out for the Dolphins’ upcoming game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, either. Wright won’t be able to obtain the usage rate needed to put together another game with 100-plus receiving yards if Achane is out there.
Still, if nothing else, Wright’s showing on Sunday helped keep the Dolphins’ hopes of securing a playoff berth alive, as they are riding a four-game winning streak in light of their most recent victory and are 6-7 on the season. Their late-season turnaround has been nothing short of impressive.
