Urgent free-agent visit confirms what Commanders fans feared

The Washington Commanders secured a comfortable victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 3, but the win came with a costly injury attached. But as has typically been the case throughout general manager Adam Peters, he's striking with conviction to offset the blow.

It was a convincing afternoon at the office for Washington. They took control early and got stronger as the game went on. Unfortunately, veteran safety Will Harris wasn't able to finish the game, and there was significant concern among players and coaches alike.

According to Ian Rapoport from the NFL Network, the free-agent signing earlier this year sustained a fractured fibula. This leaves Harris on the shelf, probably for the entire season. The Commanders have Jeremy Reaves, Percy Butler, or Tyler Owens to fill the void. That hasn't stopped Peters from potentially finding another dependable veteran who could contribute.

Commanders are bringing in Darnell Savage Jr. for a visit after Will Harris injury

Senior insider Jeremy Fowler from ESPN revealed that the Commanders were bringing in recently released safety Darnell Savage Jr. in for a visit. The defensive back saw his playing time decrease with the Jacksonville Jaguars over the opening two games of the season. Both sides opted to go their separate ways, and Harris's unfortunate injury could quickly land another opportunity at his door.

Harris has connections in Washington. Jason Simmons, the team's pass game coordinator, coached the former first-round pick out of Maryland during his rookie campaign with the Green Bay Packers. While his big-money move to Jacksonville didn't quite go according to plan, this could be a solid stopgap option for the Commanders if everything checks out medically.

The Commanders are dealing with more health problems than almost any other team right now. Peters has proved adept at rolling with the punches and having contingency plans for every eventuality. Savage also fits into his strategy of leaning on experience, although he's still firmly in the prime of his career at 28 years old.

If both parties are happy with the financial terms, Savage should come on board. That could even be on the active roster right away rather than the practice squad if Harris goes to injured reserve as expected.

Those who've been around the project all summer will likely get the first chance to replace Harris. If they fluff their lines, that's when the Commanders could turn to Savage.

That's not a bad fallback option to lean on, especially considering options are typically slim on the open market at this time of year.
