Versatility is the name of the game in Green Bay

There are many reasons why the Green Bay Packers have been such an elite team in the NFL over head coach Matt LaFleur's first three seasons (41 total wins).

Yes, they have arguably the greatest quarterback of all-time in Aaron Rodgers. Yes, they have what appears to be an elite defense. Yes, they have a winning culture and great fanbase. But perhaps the best reason why the team and it's position groups are so successful is because of one word. Versatility.

The Packers have always had a very good roster. They always make it a point to look for players who can play multiple positions or perform multiple roles at one spot.

Take the offensive line for example. The Packers drafted guard Elgton Jenkins back in 2019. In college at Mississippi State, Jenkins played every position on the offensive line and has already played all five positions along the offensive line in his young career in Green Bay. He was voted to the Pro Bowl in just his second season.

What about receiver Allen Lazard? Yes, the former Iowa State Cyclone caught eight touchdowns last season, which was second on the team, but, he is also one of the premiere run-blocking receivers in the league. He has found a home in Green Bay and in Matt LaFleur's offense after almost becoming a tight end in Jacksonville as an undrafted rookie.

Safety Adrian Amos, who starts on the back end of the defense, has developed into a great in-the-box defender. He can stuff the run at a very high level. He is coming off of a career-high season with 93 tackles. However, he has also recorded multiple interceptions in each of his first three seasons with the Packers.

Those are three players that can do multiple things really well. The Packers have been using versatility as a weapon for years. Hall of Famer and franchise great Charles Woodson could both play cornerback and safety. It has worked out pretty nicely for Green Bay when they use that strategy over the years.

Most recently, the team drafted rookies like Wake Forest offensive lineman Zach Tom, who can also play multiple positions along the offensive line.

They also added Georgia Tech linebacker and safety Tariq Carpenter, who can perform multiple defensive back roles and play special teams.

The Packers know how to find versatility and use it as a strength. It is one of the many reasons why they have won back-to-back-to-back NFC North titles and are in the Super Bowl conversation.
