One of the Steelers' outside cornerback jobs is already locked up by second-year player Joey Porter Jr., but who will play opposite him seems to be still up for debate.
Veteran cornerback Donte Jackson, whom Pittsburgh acquired in a trade that sent wide receiver Diontae Johnson to the Panthers this offseason, believes it should be him.
"I feel like I'm a complete guy," Jackson said. "I just care about being a solid, consistent guy and that's what I've been throughout my career and the tape don't lie."
The Steelers seem to agree as Jackson has been running with the first team defense throughout the first two weeks of OTAs. He believes Pittsburgh views him as a shutdown corner just like Porter Jr.
"When I first got traded here, they basically said, 'Get ready to go match. Get ready to go follow guys. Get ready to go do what we know you do well,'" Jackson stated. "They just knew I'd be a perfect corner for the system and this division."
Of course, Jackson will have to prove he can do just that better than fellow cornerbacks Darius Rush, Cory Trice Jr. and Anthony Averett, but he has been practicing as such and having early success.
"Me and Joey flip every little team event we do because we both gonna be matching guys. We're both gonna be following around," Jackson added. "It's best if we good at doing both sides like that. He didn't stick on one side last year. I didn't stick on one side in my career."
There is still plenty of time for that to change this summer. For now, however, Jackson is just excited to team up with Porter Jr. and watch him grow into a great player just like his father.
"I've seen a lot of Joey's film and what he do," Jackson concluded. "I'm just excited to see him continue to grow. He's a very smart player, just by the questions he asks and just by the stuff that he sees on the field. You already know the instincts is in him. His dad was a great player here for a long time."
