Veteran CB Trae Waynes: 'In my head I’m done'

Veteran cornerback Trae Waynes remains a free agent heading into the summer months and doesn't appear to have any desire to change that before training camp sessions begin in late July.

According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Waynes explained during an appearance on the "Geary & Stein Sports Show" that he feels he's ready to call time on his playing days.

"I mean it’s open but I’m not really exploring anything to be honest with you," Waynes said of his status. "Multiple teams have actually called, but in my head I’m done. I’m not officially doing it, I’d say, just because I don’t do that s---. I’m retired, but it’s not like I announced it or anything."

Waynes featured for the Minnesota Vikings from 2015-19 and the Bengals in 2021. He said he "almost went to Philly" to play for former Minnesota assistant and current Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon after he was released by the Cincinnati Bengals in March. The 29-year-old, who was limited to just five games during the 2021 campaign because of a hamstring issue, said that he didn't join the Eagles because he was "ready to be done" and wanted to retire on his own terms.

Assuming Waynes doesn't experience a change of heart, he'll walk away with 259 total tackles, seven interceptions, a sack, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery tallied across 79 regular-season games.
