The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the 2025 offseason with a handful of needs. Paramount was finding a long-term starter under center – that hasn’t been rectified. But the Steelers got better at receiver, reset at running back, and reinforced a defensive line that badly needed improvement against the run and pass.
In Round 1, Pittsburgh made its priorities clear. With every quarterback but Miami’s Cam Ward on the board, it spent the No. 21 pick on Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon. Another defensive tackle, Yahya Black, was added before a passer, Ohio State’s Will Howard, heard his name called.
The unit is remade and could become a position of strength in 2025. If there’s a late-offseason move to be made, though, fans might have heard about it on NFL Network.
Veteran defensive lineman Lawrence Guy made his case for the Steelers to sign him while joining “Good Morning Football.”
"I'm a defensive guy, I need to go to defensive teams." Guy said. "I understand there's a lot of things up in the air, but I would do it, I would go to Pittsburgh. I love the organization. I know I played for the Ravens, I get the rivalry, I love the black and blue game. I was a part of the black and blue game. It is what it is. This team is known for defense."
Pittsburgh would be the third AFC North team of Guy’s career. He spent three years with Baltimore from 2014–2016 and spent last season with the Cincinnati Bengals. Like much of that Cincinnati defense, things didn’t go particularly well.
Playing just four games, Guy played 90 snaps and didn’t generate a pressure. He logged just two tackles while primarily playing over the B gap, per Pro Football Focus. The chances of Guy playing a significant role on the Steelers' defense feel slim, but the idea of playing alongside stalwart Cameron Heyward has him excited.
"There has been stars after stars after stars." Guy said. "You know name it, they've played it. Right now, with me on there? I know we're two old people, me and Cam, we all know we're both old. We kind of look like each other, but he has hair and I don't have hair. This is what I'm talking about. When you got a defensive state of mind, you need to go to a defensive team. And that is what they've always been known for, it's defense and dominance."
Frankly, Pittsburgh’s defensive line is set. Heyward was incredible in 2024, and Harmon will combine with Keeanu Benton to join him on the interior. There aren’t any starting snaps to spare, and after struggling in a minor role with the Bengals, they don’t need to prioritize him.
Pittsburgh might be his preferred fit. But as Guy enters his age-35 season, there’s little reason to expect the Steelers to oblige with a deal.
