With the NFL season about to begin, it sounds like a veteran running back will leave the game behind at the age of 30.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, running back Matt Breida plans on retiring. This decision might surprise some fans, but it's worth noting that he recently declined a workout request. If he's truly ready to walk away from the NFL, he'll finish with 3,587 yards from scrimmage and 15 touchdowns.
In 2017, the San Francisco 49ers signed Breida as an undrafted rookie out of Georgia Southern. That turned out to be a savvy move for the 49ers. During his three seasons in the Bay Area, he racked up 1,902 rushing yards, 561 receiving yards and 10 total touchdowns.
The 49ers traded Breida to the Miami Dolphins during the 2020 offseason for a fifth-round pick. He finished his first and only season in Miami with 59 carries for 254 yards.
Breida tried to rebuild his value on the Buffalo Bills during the 2021 season. Although he didn't exactly light up the stat sheet, he earned a contract from the New York Giants. He spent two years with the G-Men, rushing for 371 yards and two touchdowns.
Last year, Breida returned to the 49ers in an effort to revitalize his career. However, he was cut before the start of the season.
Since the Dolphins were the team that requested a workout with Breida, it's fair to assume they'll be in the market for running back help.
Despite all the buzz about Breida retiring from the NFL, he has not yet announced his plans.
Nonetheless, we wish Breida all the best as he prepares for the next chapter of his life.
