Sure, Philadelphia Eagles rookie second-round pick safety Andrew Mukuba has certainly made some great highlight plays this season, but is he having a solid season on the field?
During the Eagles' 28-22 win over the Minnesota Vikings, Mukuba caught an interception on former Philly quarterback Carson Wentz. Many would argue that it was an easy pick since it fell right into Mukuba's hands, since Wentz had bombed it deep down the field inaccurately.
The rookie finished the game with three tackles and one pass deflection in the win. It was a decent day for Mukuba, but does it reflect what has been an inconsistent year for him?
When speaking to the media, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was asked about his evaluation of Mukuba's overall season so far. In typical Fangio style, he didn't hold back on his feelings.
"It's uneven. The ability is there. He has to be more consistent."
Reviewing the stats from his first seven games, Mukuba has racked up 35 tackles, two tackles for loss, one quarterback hit, a half of a sack, three pass deflections, and two interceptions. Pro Football Focus would agree with Fangio's assessment, grading Mukuba as the 123rd best safety in the NFL out of 145, with an overall grade of 50.3.
Mukuba has had some great moments, like his sack and interception in the Eagles' 20-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. He's also had some trouble in pass coverage, like the deep ball touchdown he allowed by Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka in Philly's win over the Bucs.
This season has certainly had its ups and downs to the point where some Eagles fans have wondered if it was the right move to trade C.J. Gardner-Johnson. While the veteran might have had cleaner games, this experience is good for Mukuba. There are also the missed tackles in the New York Giants that hurt the team.
All the traits that Eagles fans loved about Mukuba coming out of college are there, including his ball hawk skills and his ability to deliver hits when the opportunity presents itself.
It's Mukuba's first year in the NFL. Mistakes will happen. These are teaching moments for Fangio and can help his young defender grow from it and improve as a safety in this Eagles' defense.
