The Minnesota Vikings want running back Aaron Jones back for the 2025 season.
Jones was fantastic for the Vikings last season, finishing with 255 carries for 1,138 yards and five touchdowns. His 1,138 rushing yards are a career-high.
Jones is expected to be a free agent in March when the new league year starts but the Vikings want to make sure he doesn't make it to free agency.
According to Field Yates, the Vikings and Jones agreed to move the void date on his contract from Monday, February 17, to the final day before free agency. This gives the Vikings and Jones time to negotiate a new deal before the free-agent market opens.
Jones is one of several big decisions that the Vikings have this offseason. They have to decide what to do at quarterback since Sam Darnold is also expected to be a free agent in March.
Darnold was sensational during the 2024 season, finishing with 4,319 yards through the air, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He will get a nice payday in free agency if the Vikings elect to let him walk.
If that happens, the Vikings would turn the keys over to J.J. McCarthy, who missed the entire 2024 season with a torn meniscus. He got hurt during the preseason and had to have surgery on the injury.
Jones came over to the Vikings for the 2024 season after spending the previous seven with the Green Bay Packers. He has rushed for over 1,000 yards in two of the last three seasons and has four 1,000-yard rushing seasons during his career.
The Vikings finished the 2024 season with a 13-4 record and lost to the Los Angeles Rams in the wild-card round of the NFC playoffs.
