While the Minnesota Vikings are in the midst of free agency , most of the moves they are making are surrounding the roster. That's not all they are doing though, as head coach Kevin O'Connell has added to members to his coaching staff.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Vikings announced they have added Charlie Frye as a defensive assistant and Jordan Traylor as the assistant offensive coordinator/assistant quarterbacks coach, the position once held by Grant Udinski before he took the offensive coordinator job with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
We knew that Traylor was going to be added to the coaching staff two weeks ago when it was initially reported. The son of UTSA Roadrunners head coach Jeff Traylor, Jordan has spent a lot of time at the college level before joining the New Orleans Saints in 2021. He was going to stay there after Kellen Moore chose to retain him on staff, but instead chose to make the switch to the Vikings.
The interesting addition is Frye. He was a third round pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2005 NFL Draft and played in the NFL for six years before getting into the world of coaching.
He started his coaching career in the high school ranks before getting a job at the University of Florida in 2015 and bounced around before joining the NFL Ranks in 2021 with Brian Flores when he was the head coach for the Miami Dolphins. That relationship likely brought him to Minnesota, as many hires come from past relationships.
Frye spent the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Florida Atlantic Owls. He helped elevate the offense, but struggled to maintain consistency and was relieved of his duties. What's interesting is that his background is on offense but he will be a defensive assistant.
The Vikings seem to have their coaching staff finalized, which will be good heading into the NFL Draft.
