Vikings' Justin Jefferson Slammed For J.J. McCarthy Expectations

The Minnesota Vikings are entering the 2025 NFL season with a new face at the helm. They are turning to an inexperienced quarterback, who hasn’t played a single NFL snap owing to a knee injury in the 2024 preseason opener.

Sam Darnold, who led the side to a 14-3 record last season, was allowed to leave in free agency. The first-round pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, J.J. McCarthy, is set to take the Vikings' QB mantle. He threw two touchdowns in Minnesota's first preseason game last year before tearing his right knee meniscus, which sidelined him for his entire rookie season.

The Vikings' superstar wide receiver, Justin Jefferson, was asked about his expectations for the 22-year-old.

"He’s pretty much a rookie,” he said. “Last year pretty much doesn’t count for him. He’s still new to the scheme… You have to have that patience. You’re not really expecting him to have the same mindset as a veteran. You can’t really have that expectation from him."

During an episode of the "Get Up" show, NFL analyst Jeff Darlington shared his take on Jefferson's statement. While he agrees with some parts of it, Darlington is not totally on the same page as the Vikings WR.

"I don't know if I'm skeptical because I don't know exactly what the expectation is," he said. "It seems across the board with the Vikings. Like I will say this. I am willing to have more patience for, for some reason, JJ McCarthy than Caleb Williams. I don't know exactly why that is."

"It's the fact that Caleb had a season under his belt already. I just think that in the other regard, the idea of patience also feels a little lost on me because they invested so much in JJ. He's got so much around him. He's got the right coach. He's got the right wide receiver. He's got all of these things. He should succeed."

Darlington said that people have not been patient with so many other quarterbacks in the league, and there's really no need for it in McCarthy's case either.

The Vikings seem to have put their faith in the former Michigan Wolverines QB. They passed the opportunity to sign Aaron Rodgers, let Darnold walk away, and then parted ways with Nick Mullens and Daniel Jones. All eyes are on McCarthy to prove his worth in the upcoming season.
