Vikings Meet With OLB Kyle Van Noy

After two years of having a Greenard-Turner-Andrew Van Ginkel crew on the edge, the Vikings are looking at another veteran. Kyle Van Noy visited the Vikings today, The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero tweets. (KTSP’s Darren Wolfson reported earlier today Van Noy is “very much” on the Vikes’ radar and was expected to visit.). The veteran EDGE has an extensive history with DC Brian Flores.

The Patriots resurrected Van Noy’s career after he struggled in Detroit, acquiring the 2014 second-round pick in a low-end 2016 trade. Van Noy then became a regular for Patriots Super Bowl rosters — each of which had Flores in a key role. With Flores operating as the Pats’ de facto DC in 2018, Van Noy started 16 games and made 3.5 sacks. However, he added a Pats-most three sacks in the playoffs that year, helping the team claim its sixth Super Bowl title.

Flores’ now-controversial Dolphins HC tenure involved a Van Noy free agency addition; Miami gave the hybrid linebacker a four-year, $51MM deal in 2020. Van Noy registered six sacks and made 10 tackles for loss that year but was released; he has since excelled as a lower-cost pass rusher in other cities.

Van Noy combined for 31.5 sacks from 2021-24, delivering steady work with the Patriots, Chargers and Ravens. Van Noy’s Baltimore stint was the most notable here, as he tallied nine sacks as a 3-4 OLB in 2023 — helping the Ravens rank first defensively in a 13-4 season — and then 12.5 in 2024. The Ravens did not sign Van Noy initially until September 2023, and they gave him a two-year, $9MM deal in 2024. Van Noy, 35, played out that contract last season and struggled (two sacks, four QB hits in 15 games).

Minnesota is thin on the edge following the Greenard trade, rostering only 2024 UDFA Bo Richter and 2025 UDFA Chaz Chambliss as backups. The team sat out the summer edge defender market, watching the likes of Cameron Jordan, Jadeveon Clowney, Von Miller and Derek Barnett find homes. Van Noy joins Joey Bosa, Haason Reddick and Leonard Floyd as the top veteran options still available.

The Vikings also signed interior defensive lineman Naquan Jones to their practice squad Tuesday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler adds. A sixth-year veteran, Jones played in 12 games for the Chargers and Texans last season.
