The Minnesota Vikings made five selections in the 2025 NFL Draft that impacted not only the franchise’s roster depth but also fans off the field.
Minnesota selected three offensive and two defensive players during the three-day event. Three of those selections came in the fifth and sixth rounds of the draft.
One notable position that was not selected in many mock drafts was running back. This is good news for starter Aaron Jones and his fantasy football owners.
USA Today writer Ayrton Ostly went through which players came out as winners and losers after the NFL Draft from a fantasy perspective. Jones was included in the winner’s section, and the Vikings got him much-needed help on the offensive line in the first round.
“After investing in free agency to change the offensive line, the Vikings spent their top pick on another offensive lineman in Ohio State's Donovan Jackson. That bodes well for Jones and the other Minnesota running backs. Jones had a career-high 1,138 rushing yards last season, but could see an even bigger jump in his production thanks to the improved line.”
Jackson impressed scouts with his versatility. Last year, he played left tackle and left guard for the national champion Ohio State Buckeyes. He was named a second-team All-American selection and was named to the All-Big Ten team three consecutive years.
Jones re-signed with the Vikings on a two-year, $20 million contract this offseason after racking up a career-high 1,138 rushing yards in 2024. He added 408 receiving yards and seven total touchdowns in 17 games in his first season in Minnesota.
In terms of what it means in fantasy, Jones was tied for 14th among running backs. He averaged 14.2 points per game.
Selecting Jackson improves the left guard position, where Blake Brandel struggled last season. Jones and his running backs should see more open lanes and better opportunities to break out long runs.
The Vikings avoiding selecting a running back is also a plus, as Jones will already have to share carries with Jordan Mason. Less competition means Jones will still be the lead back in the running game.
With uncertainty surrounding new starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy, this is an even better year to select Jones high in fantasy drafts, as he has the potential to put up big numbers.
