Vikings' potential deadline to name starting quarterback revealed

The Minnesota Vikings' quarterback competition continues to be a major talking point.

The NFC North side has given Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy first-team reps, and while Murray seemed to be the clear-cut favorite, McCarthy has also reportedly had some strong days.

That's why head coach Kevin O'Connell might need more time to make a decision, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter.

In an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," Schefter revealed that this situation might even drag all the way into game 3 of the preseason.

The Vikings may need all of the preseason to name a starter

“They have been determined to have this play out in the preseason,” Schefter reported. “I don’t know that they’re prepared right now to say that one quarterback has distinguished themselves to win that job.”

The Vikings appear to be in no rush to make a decision. Like the Cleveland Browns, they could have both starters alternate preseason games, with whoever does best also getting the nod in the final contest.

“I think what you’d like to do is give each guy one start, and then make that decision by the third game and have that guy run the offense as a dress rehearsal for the regular season opener. But it doesn’t sound like they are ready to declare a winner now. I do think it’s going to play out into training camp and into the latter part of this month,” he added.

Notably, the fact that Murray still hasn't beaten McCarthy for the job should be an indictment of the former first-round pick.

If he won't significantly elevate this team's ceiling, one can only wonder why they would move on from a former first-round pick, homegrown talent they gave up a lot to trade up for.

Of course, that doesn't mean they should blindly roll with McCarthy unless he shows some steady signs of improvement after an injury-riddled and wildly erratic season.

For now, it looks like it'll be a while before the NFC North knows who'll they have to contain in O'Connell's quarterback-friendly offense, and no no one is truly out of the race yet.
