The Minnesota Vikings entered the 2025 season hoping quarterback J.J. McCarthy could help sustain the momentum of the franchise’s breakout 2024 campaign. Minnesota had finished 14-3 in 2024 and secured the No. 2 seed in the NFC, raising expectations that the team could remain among the conference’s elite contenders.
McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, was thrust into that spotlight after missing his entire rookie season due to injury. But his first year as a starter ultimately did not go as planned.
Across 10 appearances, he completed 140 of 223 passes (57.6%) for 1,632 yards with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, while adding 181 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. His season was repeatedly interrupted by injuries, including a high-ankle sprain, a concussion and a hand injury. The Vikings (9-8) struggled to maintain consistency during those stretches, and the young quarterback’s development stalled as the team ultimately missed the playoffs.
Those uneven performances created significant uncertainty around McCarthy entering the offseason. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini noted in January that Minnesota planned to keep McCarthy but was also exploring the possibility of adding a veteran quarterback to the room to compete at the position while continuing to evaluate its former first-round pick.
Several veteran names were floated as potential candidates for that role. Among them was Kyler Murray, who became available after being released by the Arizona Cardinals following seven seasons with the franchise.
On Thursday, those speculations became reality when Minnesota moved quickly to secure the veteran quarterback. According to reports from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, Murray agreed to a one-year contract with the Vikings, with his agent Erik Burkhardt confirming the deal. The agreement also includes a no-tag clause, ensuring Murray will become a free agent again after the season.

The development is not encouraging news for McCarthy. Murray brings a significantly more established résumé and could quickly emerge as the favorite to start in Minnesota. Despite the Cardinals’ struggles during his tenure, Murray recorded four 3,000-yard passing seasons, including a career-best 3,971 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2020, while earning two Pro Bowl selections.
His 2025 season was cut short after a foot injury in Week 5 forced him to miss the remainder of the year, contributing to Arizona’s decision to move on from him. But his proven record proves he is capable of leading Minnesota when healthy.
The arrival of a proven veteran dramatically changes the outlook of the Vikings’ quarterback competition heading into the 2026 season. Head coach Kevin O’Connell now has a difficult decision ahead as he evaluates both quarterbacks during training camp.
Whether McCarthy can retain the starting role or Murray ultimately takes control of the offense remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that the young quarterback now faces a significantly steeper climb if he hopes to secure his place as Minnesota’s long-term starter.
