The Minnesota Vikings' success in free agency has the National Football League world excited about their prospects in 2025.
Going into the offseason, the Vikings had some clearly defined needs across the board. Not only did they make huge moves, they also fortified all of their needs. The interior offensive line was a big need for the Vikings and they added center Ryan Kelly and right guard Will Fries to strengthen the unit as a whole. Pair that with retaining cornerback Byron Murhpy Jr. and signing cornerback Isaiah Rodgers along with adding defensive tackles Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave and the Vikings have a roster ready to compete.
We have contract details for the majority of the Vikings' free-agent signings with just two remaining:
Smith is set to make up to $14 million with his new contract and Skule's is unknown with his deal, but it's likely in the $2-3 million range.
Right now, the Vikings are $32,810,533 under the salary cap according to Over The Cap without either Smith or Skule accounted for. My projections will have the Vikings sitting with around $20 million in cap space once they officially hit the books.
The Vikings will have to keep most of that money for both the NFL Draft class, practice squad, and in-season signings. They can create a significant amount of money with some restructures of right tackle Brian O'Neill, edge rusher Jonathan Greenard, and tight end T.J. Hockenson. They could also extend edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel and tight end Josh Oliver to create even more.
Where things currently are with the salary cap moving forward is where things get interesting. Right now, the Vikings only have 32 players under contract for 2026 and are currently projected to be $9.1 million over the salary cap. There are even more contracts the Vikings can maneuver with next season, so it's not a major concern.
However, it does limit what the Vikings can do from a free agency standpoint. This is where the lack of depth with their draft classes is coming back to haunt them, as having a few more players on a rookie contract would be very helpful.
Regardless of that fact, it's evident the Vikings and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah are going all-in for a Super Bowl run, and who can blame them? They are in a fantastic spot after going 14-3 to maximize their talent level.
