Vikings share Kyler Murray update amid Carson Wentz rumblings

A Wednesday report indicated that Carson Wentz could potentially "win" the Minnesota Vikings' starting quarterback job if Week 1 starter Kyler Murray remained in the concussion protocol and Wentz played well in his club's Week 2 game at the rival Chicago Bears (1-0) this coming Sunday.

While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell shared a noteworthy update on Murray's status.

Kyler Murray could be ready to play in Week 2?

Per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, O’Connell revealed that Murray would be listed as a limited participant for Wednesday's practice.

"We’ll see how he responds and continue to rely on the medical folks in that regard," O’Connell said about Murray. "The good thing is the amount of reps he got from obviously competing and then being named the starter, he’s got a lot of reps logged away. But, yeah, really, we’re taking it kind of period-by-period as far as the plan we have. But we want to be monitoring how he’s doing from a standpoint of that limited participation."

Murray spent springtime workouts and a portion of the summer competing with 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy for the Minnesota QB1 gig before O’Connell named Murray his Week 1 starter ahead of the club's preseason opener. O’Connell later relegated McCarthy to QB3 duties, so Wentz filled in against the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 13 after Murray suffered his injury.

Against Green Bay, Wentz went 12-of-19 passing for 133 yards and three touchdowns as he helped the Vikings erase a 12-point deficit en route to earning a 39-22 victory.

Vikings will handle Kyler Murray's game status "as it comes to us"

"It’s a little bit more of a vague thing at the quarterback position, just because they’re in red jerseys anyway all the way up until game time," O’Connell added about Murray's status for the Chicago game. "So we’ll kind of just deal with it as it comes to us."

Murray is expected to get the nod against the Bears if he clears the concussion protocol in time to play. Otherwise, Wentz will start.

As of Wednesday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Vikings as 4.5-point road underdogs against the Bears.
