Vikings star hoping to avenge poor performance against Darius Slay, Eagles last season

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson has a score to settle with the Philadelphia Eagles and cornerback Darius Slay.

"It's always going to be a great battle with one of the top corners in the league," Jefferson said of his matchup with Slay in a Tuesday news conference. "But definitely got some things we've got to back (at) them on. Having the loss last year, not having the plays we wanted last year. There's definitely some tension going into that game."

Last season, Philadelphia dismantled Minnesota 24-7 on "Monday Night Football." Jefferson had an off night by his standards, with six receptions (on 12 targets) for 48 yards. Against Slay, Jefferson had one reception on five targets, and the defensive back logged two interceptions, via NextGenStats.

However, the fourth-year wideout might have the upper hand against Slay and the Eagles on Thursday. The 24-year-old, in the final year of his rookie contract, is playing for a massive extension after making three consecutive Pro Bowls. Despite a 20-17 loss to Tampa Bay, he had an outstanding start, with nine catches for 150 yards, second in Week 1 behind Miami's Tyreek Hill.

The Vikings struggled to run the ball in their season-opener, only rushing for 41 yards on 17 attempts. The strength of the Eagles defense is stopping the run rather than the pass. Against New England, it only allowed 76 rushing yards but surrendered 306 passing yards. To upset Philadelphia, Minnesota must target Jefferson frequently.

So, don't be surprised if the star WR has one of his most memorable performances against one of the best teams in the NFL. Plus, it's imperative for the Vikings as they look to avoid an 0-2 start and an early-season stumble.
