Vikings Targeting Pro Bowl Quarterback Amid Aaron Rodgers Rumors

The Minnesota Vikings are looking to add a veteran quarterback, but it's not Aaron Rodgers.

At the start of free agency, Minnesota was mentioned as a potential landing spot for Rodgers. The Athletic even reported that his preference is to play for the Vikings this fall. On Wednesday, however, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported that Minnesota will move forward with J.J. McCarthy as its starter for the 2025 season.

"The #Vikings have rejected multiple trade calls on J.J. McCarthy, telling other teams they’re moving forward with him as their quarterback, sources say. The team plans to add a veteran," Pelissero said. "But they’re not pursuing Aaron Rodgers at this time. McCarthy now enters the offseason as QB1."

With Rodgers off their radar at the moment, the Vikings have turned their attention over to former Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

According to Fox Sports insider Jordan Schultz, the Vikings have had discussions with Tannehill about a potential deal.

"Talks are ongoing and nothing is imminent as of right now," Schultz added.

Tannehill didn't play a single snap last NFL season. In 2023, however, he started in eight games for the Tennessee Titans.

Over the course of Tannehill's career, he has completed 64.3 percent of his passes for 34,881 yards with 216 touchdowns and 115 interceptions. He earned Pro Bowl honors during the 2019 season and was also named the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year.

While the days of Tannehill being a Pro Bowl quarterback are long gone, he'd be a fine choice for the No. 2 role on the depth chart.

And in the event Tannehill isn't interested in joining the Vikings, they could always pursue Joe Flacco.
