Vikings to learn fate on potential international games before schedule release day and it could spark controversy

The National Football League is set to release the schedule on Wednesday, May 14th and it will open the path the Minnesota Vikings need to take to make the Super Bowl.

While the entire schedule is set to come out on Wednesday, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported that the international games and select other games will be announced ahead of time.

The league announced that the league’s six broadcast partners will each announce select games from the schedule from May 12-14. The league did not share which games will be announced, but did say that the designated visiting teams for the league’s international games will be revealed on NFL Network on Tuesday.

Vikings eligible for three international games

When it comes to the Vikings' schedule, they will have eight home games and nine away games. Of those away games, they are eligible to play in three international games:

  • at Los Angeles Chargers (Brazil)
  • at Pittsburgh Steelers (Dublin, Ireland)
  • at Cleveland Browns (Tottenham, England)

It's been long rumored that the Vikings are going to play in at least one of these games, with both matchups against the Steelers and Browns being the most discussed. If they play games against those teams, they would be the second and/or third repeat matchups overseas, and the Vikings played the Steelers in 2013 and the Browns in 2017. On top of that, if the Vikings play the Steelers in Dublin, it would be the first-ever regular season matchup to take place in three different countries.

What's even more interesting is the potential of playing two international games. The Vikings could be playing international games in back-to-back weeks. This wouldn't be unprecedented, as the Jacksonville Jaguars did so in both 2023 and 2024.

Now, the Jaguars' owner, Shad Khan, also owns Fulham FC, which means they have stronger infrastructure in the UK, making things a bit easier. That's not to say that the Vikings can't figure things out, as they have excellent infrastructure, but it's definitely a disadvantage to be on a different continent for over a week.

The difference between the two is that the Jaguars have essentially agreed to play consistently overseas. These matchups would be the third and fourth games the Vikings have played in Europe since 2022.

Will the Vikings play in one or multiple international games? We will soon find out.
