Minnesota’s four-quarterback depth chart was short-lived. The Vikings are waiving Max Brosmer, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport tweets.

The team’s active-roster setup includes Kyler Murray, Carson Wentz and J.J. McCarthy. Murray’s spot atop the depth chart was confirmed earlier this month when he won out the starting gig over McCarthy. The latter was attached to speculation about his future through the summer, although he survived yesterday’s roster cuts.

McCarthy suffered an ankle injury during Minnesota’s second preseason game. It initially appeared as though a heavy workload for the Vikings’ final exhibition contest would be in store, but he did not wind up playing. Brosmer’s inclusion in the team’s initial roster could have been insurance against any lingering issues with the ailment, but Ben Goessling of the Minnesota Star-Tribune reports McCarthy’s ankle is not seen as a long-term issue.

The Vikings made a pair of additions via waivers on Monday (guard Trevor Keegan and center Nick Samac). Corresponding cuts would up being necessary as a result. Brosmer will now hit the wire. Provided he goes unclaimed, the Minnesota product will presumably represent a practice squad target for the Vikings.

Brosmer, who went undrafted last spring, wound up making seven appearances and a pair of starts during the regular season. The 25-year-old averaged just 4.6 yards per attempt while throwing four interceptions and being sacked 14 times when on the field. QB stability was a major issue in the Vikings’ case, with McCarty and Wentz each missing considerable time. Seeking an upgrade atop the depth chart, Murray was quickly added during free agency.

Murray is in line to handle QB1 duties with McCarthy and Wentz backing him up. In the event Brosmer lands on Minnesota’s taxi squad, he will be seen as a developmental option; otherwise, he will be among the signal-callers changing teams prior to Week 1.
