Last week, the Vikings signed a big-name veteran receiver who spent time with the Giants this year in Odell Beckham Jr. On Wednesday, they hosted another for a workout ( via The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero ): former Steelers and Chiefs wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster.
The 29-year-old was a consistent contributor across the first six years of his career (five in Pittsburgh, one in Kansas City), making 79 appearances (65 starts) and averaging 5.1 catches and 60.6 receiving yards per game. However, in the last three years – 2023 with the Patriots followed by a second stint with the Chiefs – he averaged fewer than two receptions and 20 yards per game.
Smith-Schuster arrived in New York in June as one of several veteran wideouts the Giants brought in as they braced for a potential early-season absence from Malik Nabers. The nine-year veteran could not emerge from the pack in training camp and was released in mid-August to make room for the addition of running back Najee Harris. He worked out for the Jets a month later, but was beat out by Sterling Shepard and Tyler Johnson for a spot on the practice squad.
Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison missed Sunday’s win over the Saints due to a hamstring injury, but he is expected to return to the field following the team’s Week 6 bye, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. With four more wideouts on the active roster and Beckham and three others on the practice squad, there may not be much room for Smith-Schuster in Minnesota, but a setback to Addison could bring about a signing.
