Von Miller is expected to sign with the Washington Commanders, he announced via Instagram . The eight-time Pro Bowler was released by the Buffalo Bills earlier this offseason.
Miller spent the last three seasons in Buffalo, but didn’t start a game in 2023 or 2024. In 2022, he started 11 games, totaling 21 tackles and – including 10 tackles for loss – and eight sacks in his first year with the Bills.
Buffalo released Miller in March ahead of the final year of his contract. He’ll now head to Washington, hoping to play a key role on a defense that made a run to the NFC Championship last season behind Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels.
Miller’s contract with the Commanders will be for one year, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Specific terms of the deal were not available at the time of publication.
Miller started his NFL career with the Denver Broncos, where he became one of the top pass rushers in the game. The 2011 NFL Defensive Rookie of the year, he made eight Pro Bowls and became a three-time First Team All-Pro selection. In 2016, he finished second in the Defensive Player of the Year voting for the second time.
Following his release, Miller received questions about whether he planned on playing in 2025 or if retirement was in the cards. He made it clear he still had more to give and wasn’t quite ready to walk away.
“I’m a locker-room guy through and through, and I can still roll out of the bed and rush the passer,” Miller said, via the AP. “That’s what I got.”
Von Miller is the latest addition for Washington as the franchise looks to build off last season’s run. The Commanders made their first NFC Championship appearance since 1991, but fell to the Philadelphia Eagles to end the historic season.
Washington also signed Javon Kinlaw to a three-year, $45 million contract to anchor the defensive line. Additionally, the Commanders made a big move on the offensive line by acquiring Laremy Tunsil from the Houston Texans. Of course, they also added a dynamic playmaker to the offense by trading for Deebo Samuel.
There’s also a concern at wide receiver with training camp looming, though. Terry McLaurin is in search for a new deal and said he hasn’t heard from the franchise in over a month. While he hopes to stay in the nation’s capital, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, his situation will be worth monitoring ahead of camp.
