Was Eagles' Jalen Hurts upset over firing of OC Brian Johnson?

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni held onto his job despite the club's epic collapse across the second half of the season, but the same can't be said for offensive coordinator Brian Johnson. 

Sirianni offered a non-answer when asked during Wednesday's news conference how quarterback Jalen Hurts reacted to Johnson's departure. 

"Obviously they have a relationship," Sirianni said about Hurts and Johnson, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. "You’ll have to ask Jalen when you get an opportunity to talk to him. But anytime you have to let people go, we all hurt when we let people go. Every one of us. This is the worst part of the job, having to let people go." 

Johnson was promoted to the offensive coordinator role last winter after Shane Steichen became head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, and the former helped Philadelphia begin the 2023 campaign at 10-1. However, the Eagles then dropped five of six games to finish the regular season before they barely put up a fight in the 32-9 wild-card playoff loss at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Perhaps more worrisome as it pertains to Philadelphia's future, numerous criticisms about Hurts' lack of adequate leadership now hover over the organization. 

"I don’t even want to get into what every player -- everyone is going to be hurting from this, not just the guy that got let go but the friendships that are -- they’re not over, but you’re not going to see that person every day like you have in the past," Sirianni added without directly saying if Hurts is upset about the firing of Johnson.

Florio previously mentioned the Eagles theoretically could afford to trade Hurts this offseason even though the 25-year-old signed a five-year contract extension reportedly worth up to $255M with $179.3M guaranteed last spring. While there's no indication Sirianni and company want to move on from Hurts, it's interesting that the signal-caller's feelings about Johnson's dismissal may remain unknown to outsiders for at least several months.
