Washington acquires QB Kyle Allen from Panthers for fifth-round pick

The market for Cam Newton and Jameis Winston keeps dwindling. In the latest move, Washington made a trade for Carolina Panthers backup quarterback Kyle Allen, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

As for what's going the other way, Washigton sent a fifth-round pick to the Panthers, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

With the signings of Teddy Bridgewater and P.J. Walker in Carolina, there's no need for Allen as a third-stringer as Carolina looks to move on from Cam Newton.

Washington now has Dwayne Haskins, Alex Smith and Allen in its quarterback room. With Haskins likely getting the starting nod, this leaves room for Washington to either trade or cut Smith, who still is recovering from surgery to repair a compound fracture in his right leg. It is unclear if the 35-year-old be ready for the start of the 2020 season.

His injury made it important for Washington to acquire a QB ahead of the 2020 campaign to both teach and back up Haskins.

With Washington taking on Allen, the destinations for Newton and Winston continue to fade.
