The Washington Commanders currently have three offensive line positions set for next season: Laremy Tunsil at left tackle, Sam Cosmi at right guard, and Josh Conerly Jr. at right tackle. The interior offensive line could see two new starters, especially after the team cut center Tyler Biadasz. With $70+ million in cap space, the Commanders may look to bolster the interior in free agency, with the starting left guard set to test the open market.

Chris Paul completed the final year of his rookie contract and is set to hit free agency in March. The former seventh-round pick began his fourth season as the backup left guard behind Brandon Coleman but eventually took over as the starter, starting the final 15 games and logging a career-high 88% of snaps. Paul excelled at pass blocking, allowing the fifth-lowest pressure rate among 32 qualified left guards at 3.18%, though his run blocking needs improvement.

The Commanders’ 23-game starter dubbed a free-agent sleeper

In an ESPN article, Jeremy Fowler highlighted multiple sleeper free agents who could have a solid market in March. Fowler name dropped Chris Paul, noting his powerful style of play and pointing out how starting offensive guards with some experience (a pulse) generally get paid.

“Every year, we comb the free agent market to identify players who might do better than fans or the media expect. These aren’t marquee players, but they have enough interest to drive up contract prices to varying degrees,” Fowler said.

“Commanders offensive guard Chris Paul: He had 15 starts last season with a powerful style of play; starting guards with a pulse get paid.”

Spotrac projects Paul signs a two-year, $9.4 million contract.
