The Washington Commanders have been ramping up training camp in Ashburn, VA, at Commanders Park, and the team added pads to practice this week. The team has been practicing against each other since the offseason began, but they will soon face another team finally.

The Commanders will participate in joint practices against the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens before each of their preseason games in August, and there has been a major change to who the team will face due to recent injuries.

All-Pro Corner is very unlikely to practice

The Commanders' first joint practice will be against the Patriots on August 6th, which is two days before their preseason game in Massachusetts. The Patriots' secondary took a blow as All-Pro corner Christian Gonzalez suffered a hamstring injury on Monday that will very likely hold him out for a few weeks as a precaution.

This name gives a lot of Commanders fans PTSD (myself included) after the selection of Emmanuel Forbes Jr. instead of Gonzalez in the NFL draft, but at least fans won't have to see in person what could have been when the Commanders' offense takes the field in practice.

This is also a missed opportunity for Jayden Daniels and the offense to face one of the best rising corners in the league. The Patriots still have Carlton Davis III and Kyle Duggar in the secondary and a very stout defensive line, so there will be plenty of other battles to watch in practice.

Ravens' offense takes a major hit before the season

The Commanders have a familiarity with the Ravens when it comes to joint practices. They're known to get chippy and competitive, and the Ravens will be without their star tight end on August 21st when they travel to Ashburn.

Isaiah Likely suffered a small foot fracture in practice on Tuesday, and he's likely to miss around six weeks because of it. This is a blow for the Ravens offense before the season starts, but also for the Commanders who want to see the improvements made on defense.

The Ravens still have Mark Andrews, who was the main player involved in the joint practice fight back in 2023. This is a different Commanders team obviously, but we know the team is ready to get scrappy with a team wearing a different logo.

The Commanders are going into the next phase of training camp healthy, but two teams they will soon be facing can't say the same, with major players suffering injuries before joint practices kick off. The joint practices are still going to be an important time for the Commanders to see the progress made this offseason and what else needs to be addressed before the season starts.
