With 46 days until the Washington Commanders2026-27 regular season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, day one of the Commanders’ training camp has concluded with multiple stories to bookmark. Various team personnel, such as General Manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn, gave some perspective on what they expect from this training camp throughout the day. In addition, Jayden Daniels, the Commanders’ quarterback, shared his thoughts on coming into training camp as a young leader and possible scheme changes. Some familiar faces spoke with the media, like Veteran WR Terry McLaurin and third-year DB Mike Sainristil, as they ramp up for the season.

HC Dan Quinn & GM Adam Peters Have Big News Before Training Camp

Peters had powerful opening remarks to the press, announcing that Pro Bowl Punter Tress Way is dealing with a minor pectoral injury and will be rehabbing to the side with no expectations of missing games. Way did not suit up for camp today; he sustained this injury prior to training camp and was placed on the non-active list. Probably nothing, but Peters did mention it. Commanders signed Matt Haack, a veteran punter, to handle duties in the meantime.

A heavier statement by coach Quinn informed us that former two-time All-Pro Wes Walker will be coaching the TEs in Washington after parting ways with Ben Steele, who was arrested for DUI in June and violated team policy.

Year Three For Jayden Daniels

NFL season is nearly back to take over our living rooms on Sundays, as all 32 NFL teams report to training camp. While Commanders Nation has burning questions about the team’s offseason additions, rookie third-round WR Antonio Williams’ ceiling this year. Also, what can Rashaad White, a veteran RB, bring to that room coming over from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?

The state of the defense is drafting Sonny Styles from Ohio State to fill the void as a dynamic young cornerstone player. Also bring in Odafe Oweh, a guy who should have brought sack numbers up for the Commanders, coming off two decent sack seasons: 10 sacks with the Ravens in 2024 and seven sacks in 2025 in only 12 games with the Los Angeles Chargers, according to ESPN. Everyone wants to know how El Capitán Jayden Daniels feels going into his Junior year in the league after missing nine games last year due to injuries that limited the team’s potential for nearly all of last season.

Daniels seems to understand the importance of staying healthy to improve his game and learn the new offensive scheme. After camp, the QB was asked about David Blough’s first-time offensive coordinator scheme and how he was coming along with it: “More comfortable than in the spring”… “Just comes with reps over time”… “Turning my back to the defense isn’t a problem; it’s a weapon,” Daniels said.

Daniels also mentioned that he “feels good” and that he and his trainer have been working so he can come to camp in great shape. Year one was historic for JD, taking the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game and winning Rookie of the Year. Year two wasn’t as fruitful, as Daniels kept finding himself on the injury report; year three could be a redemption arc for JD and help spearhead a successful season for the Commanders.

Terry McLaurin, Leader Of The Packed

McLaurin Washington, star veteran WR, is coming off a rollercoaster season, stemming from a holdout over a contract dispute last summer. Scary Terry missed seven games last year with a hamstring injury, most of which were due to his not participating in any on-field team activities until he signed his three-year $96 million extension in late August.

On WUSA9, McLaurin was asked, “Do you feel joy?”

The veteran answered, ” I always had joy in my heart just playing the game… It’s been a challenging full year for myself on and off the field. But I have the joy just to be here and pour into my teammates”, McLaurin said. With him fully focused, we could see him help the younger skill position players come along as they get camp started.

Video footage captured McLaurin interacting with undrafted rookie Jaden Bradley, working with him and other receivers on routes. Fans are excited to see Scary Terry back in full effect, making other players’ jobs easier. According to the Washington Post, the Pro Bowl WR McLaurin had five consecutive seasons with 1,000-plus receiving yards. With high expectations for third-round pick Antonio Williams to develop, McLaurin’s consistency and work ethic can help Williams learn immediately.

Competition: The Theme In Commanders’ Training Camp.

The agenda for an intense camp, implemented by coach Quinn, was evident, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Lynnell Willingham II of Westwood One Sports was at training and said the intensity is up from last year, with training camp time doubled from last year to this year. The reporter also noted that there was a large volume of pressure packages on display today, which is what new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones likes to do.

Commanders were bottom 10 in the league in all major defensive categories, and part of that problem was the older bodies, especially in that linebacker position. Drafting a staple player like Sonny Styles in the first round and getting younger up front and on the back seven is just what the doctor ordered for this defense. Players like Jordan Magee, a second-year linebacker, and Kain Medrano, who’s injured but is a great athlete, can raise the ceiling of the defense because these guys can get sideline to sideline. Everyone is bringing the juice this camp, and it’s got everyone excited to see the team’s progress this season.
