Washington evaluating Alex Smith injury, Dwayne Haskins 'ready' to play

Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith, the uncrowned NFL Comeback Player of the Year, suffered what coach Ron Rivera has referred to as calf tightness in his right leg during Sunday's 23-15 win over the San Francisco 49ers that propelled Washington to a 6-7 record and first place in the NFC East standings.

Per Nick Shook of the league's official website, Rivera informed reporters on Monday that the club is still evaluating the 36-year-old signal-caller heading into this coming Sunday's showdown with the Seattle Seahawks. Backup Dwayne Haskins, a first-round pick from the 2019 NFL Draft who was third on the depth chart earlier this season, will prepare to play if Smith can't start in Week 15.

Haskins filled in for Smith against San Francisco and completed seven of 12 passes for 51 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.

Smith, who nearly lost his leg and life following a horrific leg injury in 2018, helped guide Washington to three consecutive wins before his latest setback and accumulated a 4-1 record as the team's starter after Kyle Allen went down for the season in a defeat to the New York Giants on Nov. 8.

Haskins, meanwhile, has completed 96-of-158 passes (60.8%) for 990 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions this season.
