Washington Football Team QB Ryan Fitzpatrick headed for IR with hip injury

Washington Football Team quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will be placed on injured reserve after suffering a hip subluxation during Sunday’s Week 1 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Fitzpatrick, who signed a one-year deal for $10 million this season, went down in the second quarter. With Washington trailing 10-6 at its 32-yard line, Chargers linebacker Uchenna Nwosu hit Fitzpatrick during a throw and planted him firmly into the ground.

Taylor Heinicke took over and Washington quickly ruled Fitzpatrick out with a hip injury.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, an MRI confirmed the veteran quarterback suffered a hip subluxation. There is no timetable for his return and he will land on injured reserve, but the team is confident his 2021 season isn’t over.

A hip subluxation occurs when the ball head of the hip pops out of the socket. Thankfully for Fitzpatrick, it’s not believed he suffered any additional damage.

Fortunately for head coach Ron Rivera, the franchise is in a familiar position. Heinicke replaced Alex Smith following his injury last season and he performed very well. In the NFC wild-card round, Heinicke completed 26-of-44 passes for 306 passing yards and scored two touchdowns.

After two incompletions on his first series, Heinicke settled in. He completed 11-of-13 passes for the rest of Sunday’s game, finishing with a 119.3 passer rating.

Washington is set to play the New York Giants at home on Thursday Night Football. Projected to be a low-scoring game, Washington is a 3.5-point favorite.
