Washington legend Joe Theismann throws support behind Taylor Heinicke

Joe Theismann knows a thing or two about playing winning football in Washington.

For the youngsters out there, he specifically knows about being a winning quarterback in Washington, so when he throws his hat behind a guy like Tayler Heinicke — it matters.

Here's what Theismann had to say after the Commanders beat the previously undefeated Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night, 32-21.

That's a ringing endorsement for Heinicke, who didn't light the stat sheet up against Philly (17-of-29 passing for 211 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception) but anyone who knows anything about this Washington team knows that Heinicke isn't successful because of his stats.

Sure, he can toss the occasional beauty out to Terry McLaurin (just as the Green Bay Packers), but Heinicke's true ability is his leadership ability.

He's tough, gritty, and not afraid to walk into a tough situation and fight his way out of it.

Heinicke is the type of quarterback that teammates play for, and that's certainly why Theismann thinks the Commanders should stick with him when Carson Wentz is reactivated from the injured reserve.

A two-time Pro Bowler and winner of the 1983 NFL MVP award, Theismann played in Washington for his whole career — from 1974-85. He was the quarterback for Washington's Super Bowl XVII-winning team in 1982-83.
